A decision by airberlin to offer a Business-Class product on European flights has been a “resounding success”, the company’s CEO, Stefan Pichier, said last week, with 15,000 seats already reserved and the number “trending upwards”.
“Current booking figures show the decision was the correct one. In doing this, we have taken another important step towards becoming a network carrier,” he added.
The upgrade currently applies to Business Class passengers in the first row of seats on all short- and medium-haul flights being offered extra legroom as well as a guaranteed empty middle seat.
“The reception has completely exceeded expectations,” Pichier went on. “As a result, we are currently considering expanding the service into additional rows of seats in the near future.
“At the same time, we have observed increased demand for Business-Class flights on long-haul routes departing from Berlin and Dusseldorf, with feeder flights from German and European cities.”
Pichier said there was particularly high demand for Business Class on domestic flights within Germany, as well as on flights between Zurich and the airberlin hubs at Berlin and Dusseldorf.
As of mid-November, the airline would offer three connections a day between Dusseldorf and Geneva and was also expecting a high acceptance of Business Class on that connection.
